Tim Cook's comment about going to China for skills overlooks the fact that U.S. manufacturers, including Apple, have been foolish enough to train China to have more higher skilled workers.
Why did they do this? For short-term profits, which are more important to them than national security, a more stable economy, and the common good of American citizens.
It's time to reverse the trend. Return American schools to be the best in the world again. Make America the place where the majority of our workforce is higher skilled and more productive than anywhere else in the world.
My impression is there is a big movement to restart USA manufacturing of strategic products, such as chip manufacturing. I have not looked into the data.
A creative, strategic mind with strong leadership skills is needed to head-up this effort. I do not know the people in charge now, or whom Trump's team is considering.
The weakness of our government is throwing money with good intentions (or not) at situations like this, but without accountability. Part of me would love to be part of Trump's team helping to drive these strategic changes, but cost effectively and very strategically. The ol' US of A doesn't have deep pockets, only deep debt, so spending carefully and getting maximum value is critical to any initiative.

Thanks for sharing, David. Any thoughts on what policies or actions the incoming administration should do to make progress toward that end?
